Cosmic Quest Bullmastiffs

The deterioration of the Bullmastiff bloodlines within the South African market.

 

While this post may seem controversial I feel it is necessary to empower bullmastiff enthusiasts and establish an understanding of responsible, ethical breeding.  Please know I have good intentions and only wish to preserve the magnificence of this beloved breed. 

 

The South African Bullmastiff is under threat, the breed standard is deteriorating and many dogs are starting to resemble cross breeds (boerbul / boxer / staffie cross). This in no way affects the temperament of the animal and I acknowledge that aesthetics do not determine a dogs nature.  However the reality is there is a breed standard in place for a reason - to preserve our majestic breed and if breeders disregard this then are they not doing the breed a disservice?

Over the years I have seen "reputable" kennels breed animals that only share a slight resemblance to the Bullmastiff. There are plenty of registered breeders with "champion" bloodlines and reliable hip and elbow certificates who are selling dogs that lack the grandeur of a true Bullmastiff. The bullmastiff is meant to be a solid, strong muscular animal who, despite their formidable appearance, carries themselves with grace, exuding the most beautiful temperament. 

 

As a potential owner one should know what to look for in a bullmastiff. Use this as a guideline and once you are fully informed you will have a better understanding of what to look for. 

 

My journey stared 21 years ago when I first encountered the breed. I was blessed with two gorgeous males who crept into my heart and carved out this new journey between myself and the Bullmastiff breed. I have not had another dog breed since, nothing can live up to my dogs (#biasedopinion )

 

I have came to realize that a Kennel name / champion show dogs / KUSA registration does not necessarily guarantee quality breeding. My first brindle, who is 11 years old now, came from a well known reputable Kennel and although she has the most beautiful soul, she is no bullmastiff. She is small boned, has a long nose and a petit head, she looks like a Staffie cross. (Image in comments)

I started to realize this problem was country wide. New bloodlines were desperately needed. I would like to show you some dogs from Juohn Bullmastiffs. Jeanne, put a great deal of time and money in to re-establishing fresh new bloodlines by importing over 20 dogs from abroad. I asked Jeanne if I could use her images because she is no longer breeding and there would be no conflict of interest with this post. I have attached images of her dogs and past pups. This will help give you an idea of what a solid dog with a sound conformation looks like.
